First and Greatest Commandment

maarriageSince review is the price of knowledge we should often remind ourselves of the first and greatest commandment in the Bible. When someone asked Jesus to designate the most important commandment in the Bible, our Lord immediately quoted Deuteronomy 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” Then our Lord unhesitatingly declared that this is the first and greatest commandment. Let’s often remind ourselves that this commandment states the goal of keeping all commandments found in Scripture. Therefore, we hate every impediment to loving Father, Son and Holy Spirit more. We shun everything that diminishes our affection for the Lord.   Living with the first and greatest commandment in mind makes us more than conquerors through him who loved us and gave himself for us!

What Does God Look Forward To?

        godiscallingyou

What does God look forward to?  Your presence in his courts!  No, I’m not referring to moving to heaven.  God looks forward to sharing private time with you as you worship, praise, magnify and glorify him.  The Lord likes being appreciated; he enjoys being paid attention to; he longs to interact with your spirit.  Don’t you recall Zephaniah 3:17?  “The Lord, your God, will take great delight in you;…he will…rejoice over you with singing.”  Yes, the Creator of everything created you for himself.

Set a time goal for being alone with the Lord.  15 minutes? 20 minutes?  Adhere to your goal everyday and you will experience God’s presence.  Soon, you will start looking forward to your time with the Lord just like he excitedly anticipates being with you!

Be greatly encouraged,

Pastor James Fields

When You Don’t Know What to Ask

Bible StudyHere’s an email we received: “The surgery was a disaster. My husband had a brain hemorrhage and stroke in recovery. He was in ICU for 9 days. His brain is slowly waking up. It probably will be a recovery that takes several weeks/months. Thanks for praying for us—we have needed it!”  After reading this email we didn’t know specifically how to pray for our friend. What do we do when we don’t know what to ask? …

Your Spouse’s Helper

praying-couple

Love makes us want to help the one we love. Therefore, it should be easy for us to desire to be a helper for our spouse. Regrettably, it doesn’t always work that way. We are so self-centered we concentrate on how our spouse helps us and overlook opportunities to be a helper to them. But this self-centeredness can be eliminated. In fact, that’s one of God’s reasons for creating marriage—to deliver us from self-centeredness. …

Wedding Rings
“Sometimes I feel like a pastor’s widow,” Delores mentioned.

I was a young pastor working six days a week from early morning until late evening. I rarely came home for lunch since I viewed lunch as a great time to visit with guys in my church. Appointment after appointment filled my day, and visitation consumed most of my evenings. It never dawned on me that my wife sometimes felt like a pastor’s widow. …

“Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen,” 1 Timothy 1:17.Scuba Diving Buddies

From the very first session of the scuba diving class I took, our instructor emphasized that you never dive alone.  In fact, he paired all of us into buddy teams.  For the entire semester we always entered the pool with our buddy and carried on our training with our friend at our side. …

Gentleness or Wrath

Here’s a wonderful paragraph written by Mark Melendez, an elementary principal in Sugarland, Texas. Mark’s comments apply to all of us. I hope you are encouraged to practice gentleness.

“Let your gentleness be known to all.” – Philippines 4:5

“A gentle tongue turns away wrath.” – Proverbs 15:1

I guess my position as building principal gives me many opportunities to stir up wrath or add fuel to it. It hasn’t taken me long to realize that wrath never ends well. I think our selfish nature figures that it is something we deserve. When someone else does us wrong it’s our duty to make them pay. We often attack either face to face with boisterous well placed, cutting words, or we choose to inflict pain through the long drawn out process of gossip, fault-finding, and devious plots. The result is harmful to all involved. This mindset robs our joy and destroys relationships to all involved, and often to innocent bystanders.
