One November we drove out to Padre Island. I expected brown dreary winter vegetation on the dunes and pastures. What a surprise! Instead of gloom there was glory. Countless millions of brilliant yellow wild flowers carpeted every inch of the vegetation zone. I’ve never seen Padre Island robed in such gorgeous apparel. No matter where you looked fields of flowers stretched to the horizon.
As I reveled in nature’s unexpected beauty, I began praising nature’s Creator. Then I learned something about him. Our God cares about both our needs and desires. So many Christians feel that God only obligates himself to meeting our needs. Who needed these countless millions of wild flowers? Certainly, we could all live good lives without wild flowers. Most people never drive to the island and experience the thrill of witnessing this grand display of God’s genius. We don’t need wild flowers, but God just throws them in as extras. He wants us having fun looking upon his handiwork. God cares about our so-called “frivolous” desires. I’m not talking about sinful desires but just regular, everyday holy desires.
The Bible repeatedly tells us that God cares about our needs. He does that over and over in the Bible. These wild flowers prove God cares about the extra things we don’t need but sure enjoy. God wants to gives us the cake with plenty of frosting! How many years I faithfully lived for Jesus without asking for more than the most and better than the best. I just skimped by as best I could.
Dear friends, wild flowers prove that our infinite God wishes to lavish upon us every good and perfect gift. Let your faith in God soar. Let him both care for your needs and fulfill your desires.
