Hundreds of Bible promises end with statements like “I am the Lord.” Many others include “declares the Lord.” Still more promises conclude with “the Lord is His name.”
Why so much repetition? Doesn’t God know that we gladly accept His lordship over our lives?Yes, he knows believers submit themselves to him. Nevertheless, he wanted to attach his signature to his promises. “I am the Lord,” “declares the Lord,” and “the Lord is His name” serve as God’s autograph.
Notice how God’s signature added force to the promise he gave Moses: “I will bring you to the land…I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord,” Exodus 6:8. God’s signature guarantees that his infinite person and inexhaustible resources back up his promises.
“The Lord…builds his lofty palace in the heavens and sets its foundation on the earth; he calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land—the Lord is his name,” Amos 9:5-6. Feel the added assurance his signature gives the promise?
God repeats himself for our sake. He wants to fill us with the conviction that he stands behind all the promises in the Word of God!
