Humans believe that activity proves personal worth. The more we do, the more significant we become. Life is valuable when life is very, very busy. If we do nothing, we aren’t important. These beliefs spring from a desire to establish our own worth through self effort. We think that busyness shows our worthwhileness. Only our Creator assigns worth to our lives; he is the Assignor of Significance.
God Proved Our Worth by Watching Over Our Birth
“You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb,” Psalm 139:13. God’s watchful care over the development of our personality and body proves we are worthwhile people. He thinks so highly of us that he guided our formation during gestation. As unborn infants, we did nothing to earn significance or prove our value. Only God’s involvement with us assigned immeasurable significance to us before our birth.
God Proved Our Worth by Crushing His Only Begotten Son
“It was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,” Isaiah 53:10. Heavenly Father values us so much that he inflicted our punishment upon his only begotten Son. Our sinfulness earned punishment for us, but Heavenly Father rescued us because he thinks so highly of us. Do we need further proof of our assigned significance? What more must Father do to demonstrate how much he values us? Surely, the crushing of his son shows that Heavenly Father takes great delight in us and rejoices over us with singing, Zephaniah 3:17.
God Proved Our Worth by Calling Us into Private Fellowship With Him
God calls us aside from human hustle and bustle into private time with him. His desire for us demonstrates our importance. The King who created the universe requests an audience with us. He wants to just be with us. We don’t have to do anything–just enter his presence. His hunger for our company relieves us from the effort to prove we are somebody. We are somebody because he says we are!
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,” Colossians 3:23. Be active, but don’t depend upon activity to prove your worth. Otherwise, activity will fill your life, and you will have no time for him. Trust him as your Assignor of Significance!
