“Do not forget my words or swerve from them,” Proverbs 4:5. Regrettably, we humans easily forget what we are not reminded of. Consequently, Scripture often tells us to read the Word because if we don’t, we forget it or swerve from its directions and commands.
Fortunately, when Jesus drew me to himself he also planted a hunger in my heart for his Word. As a high school senior I established a regimented reading program for myself. Seven days a week I read thirty minutes a day in the Old Testament and thirty minutes a day in the New. I followed this program for years. Then, I added a Proverbs chapter each day according to the calendar date. This disciplined reading of the Word planted it in my heart and mind.
A few years ago, I started casual reading of the Scriptures in addition to my regimented program. As I had a few minutes here or there I listened to a Psalm or two or three and perhaps read part of a shorter book of the Bible. This reading takes place during moments of my day that aren’t filled with lots of responsibilities. This program of casual reading has added new zest to my relationship with God’s Word and filled my day with lots of meaningful moments.
I recommend regimented and casual reading to all of you who love the Lord!
